Christian Education at FPC

Christian Education has long been a priority and a strength at First Presbyterian Church.

We seek to always grow in our faith by learning.

Young and old, we gather to learn about:

The Bible

the historic faith

what Jesus would do

the mission of God's people...

how to be a Christian!

K-7 Church School

Our K-7 church school meets Sundays at 9:00 a.m. during the program year (roughly September through May).  The school assembles in the sanctuary for a brief message and organizational work, and then heads upstairs to our new church school classrooms.

We use the age-appropriate rotation-model curriculum from the Presbyterian Church (USA): We Believe/Workshop.  This is a smartly designed curriculum which employs various learning methods to learn and celebrate biblical messages, such as:

Storytelling

Art and Craft

Drama

Games and Puzzles

Audio-Visual

and more

The FPC children really find that getting at the lessons in different formats makes for richer, more interesting learning!

Nursery

Staffed by childcare director Brenda Adiska, the FPC nursery is open Sundays 9-12 during the program year, and 9-11 during the summer.

This lets the parents get some time to learn and grow in the peace of the sanctuary, but especially, this is so our youngest church goers can benefit from

the care given there,

the "little Christian community" that is formed,

and from crafts and readings from The Beginner's Bible that Brenda offers.

We also welcome everyone from newborn on up to be in the sanctuary with Dad and/or Mom.  We are all children of God.

Adult Study

The FPC Adult Study Group meets Sunday afternoons at 5pm in the church library for concise, to-the-point, one hour study, discussion, and fellowship.  In recent months we studied the 16 chapters of the Gospel of Mark, and a current book.

We also do shorter studies in current topics, and sometimes watch a short film.  Decaf and often dessert is served!

It's led by the pastor and different church members, and our goal is simply to learn and grow, to get to know each other along the way, and to have fun.

Youth Group

The FPC Youth Group is cooperatively led by the upper youth and a number of adult advisors.  In other words, in this group the youth take on responsibility for what they want to do through the year, from studies to outreach work to hang out time!

In recent years the Youth Group has attended both Fire Up! in Marquette and Power of One in Green Bay, has sponsored a Compassion International child, has met for a mid-winter study series, has raked leaves for the elderly in the community and bought Angel Tree presents...and has served a congregational Thank You meal.  Youth Sunday--usually shortly after Easter Sunday--is a worship service not to be missed.

Our youth are growing up strong in maturity, faith, service, and purpose.

Confirmation

For youth who have reached the 8th and 9th grades, we offer every other year a fantastic fall confirmation program.  These youth meet Sundays for confirmation class, and several times during the confirmation months with a mentor for special learning activities.

And More!

There's a LOT going on!

Vacation Bible School

For three years running, FPC has joined with Escanaba's Central and First United Methodist Churches for Tri-Church Vacation Bible School.  We rotate between the facilities.

We choose high quality curriculum, go a little crazy with games, drama, music, decorations, food and fun, and every year it is the same: the kids learn so much and can't wait through the days for the VBS hours to resume.  They learn biblical messages in unique ways and sing the faith!

Check some of the photos below to get a suggestion of the grand event that is Tri-Church VBS!

VBS 2009

Rome: Paul and the Underground Church  This was a great journey back in time to first-century Rome.  We visited the Apostle Paul and his guard, Brutus; we worshipped in an underground church; strolled through a marketplace; worked up a sweat in the Olympic games, and jammed to the Extollo Band.  The mission project: 220+ Bibles to China via American Bible Society.  60 kids and 30 adults created an event that won't soon be forgotten.

Rainforest Adventure  We journeyed to a place where all of nature sings God's praise, and we learned the message of God's love.  The mission project: monetary support for a small church in inner city Desamparados in Costa Rica.
